Episode 101 - The Five Figures, Zero F***s Business

Welcome to Season 5! I am back on the microphone - and for the first time, with my actual face (lucky you!) as we gently slide a bit of video into the podcast. Today, we are diving deep into a concept I have been percolating so far this year: The Quiet Business (or as I affectionately call it, the "Five figures zero f***s business").

This episode was born from an aha moment in February 2026. After challenging myself to step out of my comfort zone and attend a major awards ceremony (as a finalist no less!), I found myself sitting on a long train ride home with a migraine and a profound realisation. While everyone else was in their "glad rags" drinking wine at the awards ceremony, what I really wanted more than anything was to be at home tucking my son into bed. That lifestyle just isn't for me in this season of my life - and that is A-OK!

If this thinking resonates with you, too, then you're not alone. This ep is for YOU.

Key Takeaways from the Episode

I’m challenging the narrative that we must always be scaling, growing, and "leveling up" in business. What if it’s okay to just maintain? What if your current business isn't a stepping stone, but the actual destination? In this ep, I dive into:

  • The Myth of the "In-Between": We often treat the one-man-band, five-figure business as a temporary pit-stop on the way to something bigger. But if you are happy where you are, it is okay for this to be your destination.

  • The 5-Figure Majority: Despite the "noise" on social media from the small percentage of businesses scaling to seven figures, the reality is that five-figure solo businesses are the majority in the UK (listen to my previous ep on this for more - link below!)

  • The True Cost of Hustle: I share the "sobering reality" of my corporate past - where the price of "success" was paid over and over in physical health, mental health, debt, and chronic anxiety. And why I refuse to live like that any more.

  • Internal over External Validation: While being nominated for an award by a client was lovely, my priority right now is internal validation. Do I enjoy what I'm doing, how I'm living? I want to feel happy with the choices I make when I lay in bed at night.

How to Build Your Own Quiet Business

I also break down the mechanics of moving away from the "shoulds" and toward a business that actually serves your life:

  • The Honesty Audit : Asking yourself which parts of your business are for you and which are serving your ego or your FOMO.

  • Defining Your "Enough": How to use a financial calculator to determine exactly how much you need to live, including time off and business investments. This leads to your "Real Hourly Rate" - the return you need for every hour you sit at your desk. Link below to grab your calculator and get on this right now!

  • The Shield of "No": How to make "No, not for me right now" your default catchphrase and use it as a shield to protect your calendar, your energy, and your capacity.
